There is an underground river, hidden under the main pyramid in Chichen Itza, located in the Yucatán peninsula, Mexico. According to scientists, the center of the Universe for the Maya civilization was considered to be the river under the Kukulkan pyramid. Archaeologists have already found a crevice 20 meters under the Kukulkan pyramid, also known as El Castillo.
According to geophysicist Rene Chavez Segura the river flows just underneath the pyramid. Such underground rivers are not uncommon in Mexico, they connect the cenotes (famous Mayan water sources, which served mainly for human sacrifices).
According to archeologist Guillermo de Anda, the underground river could be a symbol of the center of the Universe for the Maya civilization, “as a tree, spreading its roots into the ground”. In this case the surrounding cenotes show the directions of the World.
Scientists point out another finding, made in the ruined city of Uxmal, the northwest part of Yucatan. Next to the remains of an ancient building, known as the Governor’s Palace, archaeologists found traces of an herb garden from the Mayan epoch. The scientists found an overall number of 150 sanative plants, able to heal a number of diseases, from a snake bite to digestive infections.
